Tips and insights from our experts
Make your own natural cleaners
Most homeowners and renters spend a lot of money on cleaning products. There are products for kitchens, bathrooms, floors, toilets, glass, wood furniture – the list goes on and on. But many of these household cleaners contain chemicals that can be toxic and are completely unnecessary. You might be surprised to learn that some basic, inexpensive ingredients – many of which you might already have in your home – can be mixed into natural cleaning solutions that will eliminate dirt, germs, and even grease, just as well as the more expensive options. According to The Daily Green, “…there are safe, non-toxic cleaning materials that you can pick up very inexpensively in town at the supermarket or fruit and vegetable store.” Check out their ideas for natural cleaning solutions for the bathroom, grill and oven, and toilet.
Bathroom cleaners
Mix about a half-cup of baking soda with a small drop of mild, biodegradable liquid detergent. This simple concoction, applied with a cloth or sponge, will clean the bath, sink, and toilet surfaces to perfection.
Grill and oven cleaner
This suggestion is simple: slice a lemon in half. That’s it. A lemon can be used to clean the barbecue grill, oven tops and even the inside of ovens – and you can also try it on windows and mirrors (you’ll need more than one lemon of course). As a bonus lemon is also a good antiseptic.
Toilet cleaner
Keep a spray container in the bathroom filled with a white vinegar solution, mixed 50:50 with water. The slightly acidic nature of white vinegar makes it effective at dissolving grease, soap scum and lime deposits from smooth surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. Vinegar can be an all-household cleaner that will tackle almost any cleaning job and because it’s so gentle, vinegar is also safe to use on hardwood floors. Spray it around the rim and bowl of the toilet and wipe away after 15-30 seconds. For tougher scale and grime, use neat vinegar.
Window cleaner
Mix 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of liquid detergent with 3 tablespoons of vinegar and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle and use as if you were using a commercial window-cleaning brand. In this recipe the soap is important, because it cuts the wax residue from commercial products you might have used in the past.
Creamy soft scrubber
Pour about 1/2 cup of backing soda into a bowl, adding enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frosting, and then scoop the mixture onto a sponge. This works well for a bathtub, for example. You can also add 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerine to the mixture and store it in a sealed glass jar to keep the product moist, if you want to make enough for more than one cleaning day.
